In 2015, Tanzania population was estimated at 53.5 million, of which 69 percent is rural. The vast majority of the population lives inland, far away from the coastline. In 2015, 77 percent of the urban and 46 percent of the rural population were using improved drinking water sources, which is 56 percent of the total population. The economy is largely based on services and agriculture. Despite its importance, agriculture is vastly affected by unreliable rainfall and periodic droughts.
